What is a songwriter split sheet?
A split sheet records how the ownership of a musical composition is divided among its writers. It is commonly completed while the details of a writing session are still fresh so collaborators have a shared record of the agreed percentages.
Why should song splits total 100%?
Composition ownership represents the entire song, so the writer shares should add up to 100%. Missing or conflicting percentages can create registration problems and can slow a sync license when a music supervisor or licensing team needs clear ownership quickly.
What information belongs on a split sheet?
- Song title
- Writer names
- Ownership percentages
- Performing rights organization affiliations
- IPI or CAE numbers when available
- Publisher information
This calculator helps organize those details, but it is not a replacement for a signed agreement when one is required.
