License assumptions

How are sync fees commonly divided?

A synchronization license can involve two separate rights: the musical composition and the sound recording. In many transactions, one part of the fee relates to publishing rights and another relates to the master recording.

Master rights and publishing rights

The master side belongs to whoever controls the specific recording. The publishing side belongs to the writers and publishers who control the underlying composition. A single party may control both sides, or several parties may need to participate.

Why ownership percentages matter

If you control only part of one side of the copyright, your economic interest may be smaller than the total license amount. This calculator is intended to illustrate that relationship rather than predict a specific deal.
